About
The Hungarian Batthyány Foundation, the Batthyány Lajos Foundation, and the Hungarian Women’s Union commemorated the women of the 1848–49 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence—those who stood alongside and behind the men: wives, mothers, and family supporters.
In the approach of the anniversary of the heroic martyrs of Arad, it is important and fitting to honour them as well. These women either took an active part in the struggle themselves or provided the essential background support, protection, and cohesion. Among them were the “flag mothers,” Countess Antónia Zichy, wife of Count Lajos Batthyány; Terézia Meszlény, wife of Lajos Kossuth; Zsuzsanna Kossuth, his sister; and Mária Lebstück, the Croatian–Hungarian woman soldier.
These exemplary female life stories were presented in a roll-up exhibition, through which we aim to commemorate the individual and collective efforts of all patriotic women—women soldiers, military wives, and nurses alike.
